Opening up a server is much easier than making a map. There are 2 ways: via the Half-Life Dedicated Server tool in Steam, or simply by clicking new game and enabling steam network.
Once you have a server it's better to install AmxModX, ReHLDS, Reunion and Metamod. You should put some work into making the server attractive for new players, that means plugins, custom models/sounds and even game modes.
Once you get the hang of it, I recommend buying a hosted server either VPS or specific Game Hosting. We recommend LigaHosting.ro!
